Atlas Copco is an industrial group with world-leading positions in compressors, construction and mining equipment, power tools and assembly systems. The Langley BC branch supports the world mining industry providing products and services for drill stems and related drilling equipment. One of the challenges they faced, was cleaning the oil, metal cuttings, rock and mud from the drill stems returned to the factory for repair. Cleaning the hollow drill stems was a time consuming and costly endeavour for the shop. In addition, Atlas Copco was being charged on every litre they where collecting for waste water treatment.

They approached EDS Pumps & Water Treatment Ltd., to come up with a wash down and treatment design to minimize these costs.

EDS designed a two stage process that quickly and efficiently cleans the drill stems and separates out all the unwanted mud, rock, metal cuttings and oil. The final stage involves removing the oil and recycling the process water.

As a result, the whole process has almost zero discharge, saving Atlas Copco the huge water treatment costs and loss of productivity, as well as making the company a new leading environmental partner in the Municipality. Now Certified ISO 14001 Environmental, Atlas Copco expects to have the entire project paid for in savings in a little over 14 months.
