Affordable UV Water Disinfection for Well Owners
For homeowners who rely on a private well, having clean, safe drinking water starts with understanding what is in your water, and how to protect it.
At EDS Pumps & Water Treatment, we’re excited to introduce UVDynamics as a new UV water disinfection option for our customers. Manufactured in London, Ontario, UVDynamics has been designing and manufacturing UV water disinfection systems in Canada for more than 25 years. Their systems offer reliable technology at a budget-friendly price point, making UV disinfection more accessible for homeowners looking for an effective way to protect their well water.
Why Is UV Water Disinfection Important for Well Owners?
Unlike municipal water supplies, private wells are the responsibility of the homeowner. Your well water can be affected by changes in groundwater conditions, surface runoff, agricultural activity, flooding, or other environmental factors.
Even water that looks, tastes, and smells perfectly normal can contain microorganisms that aren’t visible to the naked eye.
UV water disinfection provides an additional layer of protection by using ultraviolet light to inactivate microorganisms as water passes through the UV chamber. UV light disrupts the DNA of microorganisms, preventing them from reproducing and reducing their ability to cause illness.
For private well owners, UV is particularly valuable because it provides continuous treatment at the point where water enters your home.
UV Doesn’t Add Chemicals to Your Water
One of the benefits of UV water disinfection is that it is a physical treatment process rather than a chemical one. UV doesn’t add chemicals to your water, doesn’t change its taste or odour, and doesn’t create the disinfection by-products associated with some chemical treatment methods.
UV systems can also be relatively inexpensive to operate. UVDynamics estimates that a standard residential UV system uses approximately 20 cents per day in electricity, with routine maintenance primarily involving annual lamp replacement and periodic quartz sleeve cleaning.
A Budget-Friendly UV Option from a Canadian Manufacturer
One of the reasons we’re excited to carry UVDynamics is the value their systems offer.
UVDynamics manufactures its power sources and stainless-steel disinfection chambers in Canada, with a range of residential systems designed for different flow rates and applications.
For homeowners looking for dependable UV water disinfection without necessarily stepping into the higher price ranges of some competing systems, UVDynamics provides several options to consider.
Their residential lineup includes compact systems for lower water demands as well as larger systems for homes with higher flow requirements. Models range from approximately 6 to 20 GPM at a 30 mJ/cm² dose, with higher-flow options available depending on the system and required UV dose.
Many UVDynamics systems also include features designed to make ownership easier, including:
- Audible and visual lamp-failure alarms
- Annual lamp-change reminders
- Easy-service lamp connections
- Long-life UV lamps rated for approximately 9,000 hours
- Stainless-steel disinfection chambers
- Optional solenoid compatibility on select models for automatic water shut-off during alarm conditions
What About the UVDynamics Warranty?
Another consideration when choosing a UV system is what kind of support and warranty coverage comes with the equipment.
UVDynamics provides a workmanship and materials warranty covering its water disinfection systems:
- 10-year pro-rated warranty on the stainless-steel disinfection chamber
- 3-year warranty on UV power sources
- 1-year warranty on UV lamps, quartz sleeves, and sensors
The warranty begins on the date of purchase, and proof of purchase is required. Replacement lamps and parts purchased outside the original warranty also carry a one-year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. See here for more information.
As with any water treatment equipment, warranty coverage is subject to the manufacturer’s conditions, including proper installation and maintenance.
UV Works Best as Part of a Complete Water Treatment System
It’s important to understand that UV doesn’t remove everything from your water.
UV water disinfection is specifically intended to address microorganisms. It does not remove minerals, sediment, iron, manganese, hardness, or other water-quality issues.
That’s why water testing should come first when you’re determining what treatment your well needs. Contact our team at EDS Pumps and Water Treatment to book a water test here.
UVDynamics also recommends appropriate pre-treatment before UV. Sediment and certain minerals can interfere with UV transmission or build up on the quartz sleeve, reducing the amount of UV light reaching the water. At a minimum, UVDynamics recommends a 5-micron pre-filter before UV equipment, with additional treatment depending on the quality of the source water.
A typical well-water treatment setup may therefore include sediment filtration and other treatment equipment first, followed by UV as the final treatment stage before water enters your home’s distribution system.
Don’t Forget Annual UV Maintenance
Installing a UV system is only part of protecting your water supply. Regular maintenance is essential.
UV lamps gradually lose output over time, even if the lamp is still visibly working. UVDynamics recommends replacing the UV lamp annually to maintain effective disinfection. Their systems include a lamp-change reminder to help homeowners keep up with this important maintenance.
Regular water testing is also still recommended, even when a UV system is installed. Testing helps verify the overall quality and safety of your well-water system.
